Friday, 01 March 2024
We would like to motivate you to consider nominating yourself or a colleague to serve as a Global Ocean Observing System Steering Committee member. The importance of such a role is outlined below, and we just want to add that our biogeochemistry community needs strong leadership on the GOOS SC in order to help inform the international and intergovernmental agendas on our needs and challenges related to fulfilling our roles as ocean and climate observers and analysts. Nominations and self-nominations of Early Career Ocean Professionals will be highly appreciated!
Dissertations Symposium in Chemical Oceanography (DISCO XXIX)
Thursday, 15 February 2024
We are pleased to inform you that applications are now being accepted for this year's Dissertations Symposium in Chemical Oceanography (DISCO XXIX) to be held 19-24 October 2024 in Lihue, Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi. This symposium is for recent graduates or soon to graduate PhD-level scientists working on chemical oceanography related topic, who are interested in pursuing a career in academia or research laboratories. The attendees will present their research in front of their professional peers and representatives from some of the federal agencies funding chemical oceanographic research, and have the opportunity to forge professional relationships that will facilitate their future research and academic careers.

Changes in the IOCCP Scientific Steering Group and the Project Office
Friday, 09 February 2024
Efficacy, timeliness and impact of the coordination and communication services we provide depends to a large degree on the willingness and availability of experts in our community to lead thematic elements of our portfolio. This is a voluntary service which, more often than not, demands engagement outside of working hours, outside of working days and sometimes outside of the direct expertise of those providing it. These Heroes need to be recognized and properly acknowledged, therefore in this message we would like to inform you about a few recent changes in the composition of the IOCCP Panel and Office. We take this opportunity to thank those rotating off and to welcome those assuming new roles.
Global Greenhouse Gas Watch Implementation Plan Draft - Open for comments, until 31 January 2024
Thursday, 25 January 2024
As you may know, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has been given the mandate by the 19th World Meteorological Congress (Cg-19, May 2023) to develop an Implementation Plan for the Global Greenhouse Gas Watch – G3W, a new Flagship of the WMO. A G3W implementation plan draft v1.0 with a G3W presentation v1.0 to guide the document navigation, are now available for public review.

2024 SCOR Visiting Scholars Program - Call for Applications
Monday, 13 November 2023
We are pleased to inform you about the call for applications for the 2024 SCOR Visiting Scholars Program, which is open to any scientists who have time available to spend teaching and mentoring in a developing country for two weeks or more. The overarching goal of this program is to inspire, motivate, and inform students and faculty at developing institutions while also building long-term and sustainable collaborations and capacity. These scholarships are not intended to directly support research, although collaborative research may be an outcome of a visit. Applications from all regions of the world are welcome and the visit can happen at any time between February 2024 and December 2024.
Applications for the 2024 SCOR Visiting Scholars Program should be sent to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by 29 December 2023 (up to 23:59 UTC). For further details, please read the call for 2024 SCOR Visiting Scholars.
Biogenic Data Products to Advance Ocean Carbon Sequestration Modelling in the Arctic – Community Online Workshop
Wednesday, 08 November 2023
Motivated by the calls for more integrated ocean carbon research, two EU-funded projects ECOTIP and EU4OceanObs have been supporting since early 2023 a multidisciplinary group of researchers in convening a new working group activity around ocean carbon sequestration data synthesis and modelling in the Arctic. Building on the results of an open community survey which engaged over sixty experts in Arctic carbon observations and modelling, both senior and early-career researchers from across Europe, North America and Asia, on 18-19 October 2023 the group organized an online workshop which gathered over 30 attendees tasked with identifying and designing biogenic data products to advance ocean carbon sequestration modelling in the Arctic. The event was also supported by the IOCCP, as part of the efforts to strengthen the integration across the biogeochemical modelling and observing interface.
GLODAPv2.2023 data product released!
Monday, 06 November 2023
On behalf of the GLODAP Reference Group, and hundreds of seagoing oceanographers who tirelessly have collected data all over the ocean, we are happy to announce the publication of GLODAPv2.2023.
The Global Ocean Data Analysis Project (GLODAP) data product provides access to quality controlled surface to bottom ocean biogeochemical data, with an emphasis on seawater inorganic carbon. GLODAPv2.2023 is an update of the previous version, with 23 additional cruises and includes measurements from more than 1.4 million water samples from the global oceans collected on 1108 cruises. The data for the 13 core variables have undergone extensive quality control, especially systematic evaluation of bias. The data are available in two formats: (i) as submitted by the data originator but updated to WOCE exchange format and (ii) as a merged data product with adjustments applied to minimize bias.
More details about GLODAP background as well as the v2.2023 release poster can be found here.
The IOCCP promotes the development of a global network of ocean carbon observations for research through technical coordination and communication services, international agreements on standards and methods, and advocacy and links to the global observing systems. The IOCCP is co-sponsored by the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. Read more…
