We would like to motivate you to consider nominating yourself or a colleague to serve as a Global Ocean Observing System Steering Committee member. The importance of such a role is outlined below, and we just want to add that our biogeochemistry community needs strong leadership on the GOOS SC in order to help inform the international and intergovernmental agendas on our needs and challenges related to fulfilling our roles as ocean and climate observers and analysts. Nominations and self-nominations of Early Career Ocean Professionals will be highly appreciated!
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO is accepting nominations for scientific and technical experts to serve on the Global Ocean Observing System's Steering Committee alongside the five members elected by the IOC Member State Electoral Groups in June 2023.
The GOOS Steering Committee plays a pivotal role in guiding the strategic direction of GOOS, fostering collaboration, and ensuring the effective implementation of ocean observation initiatives worldwide. These efforts align with the GOOS 2030 Strategy and are in response to the evolving needs for ocean observation. Additionally, with the increased role of the GOOS Management Team as the Ocean Decade Coordination Office (DCO) for Ocean Observing, the Steering Committee will also play a vital part in shaping the strategy for ocean observing within the Ocean Decade.
Expertise of the Steering Committee members should include capacity in ocean observing (including in situ and satellite), data management, operational services, risk management, governance, resource sourcing and management, technology development, capacity development, and/or outreach and communications. Nominations of Early Career Ocean Professionals are welcome.
Steering committee members are expected to attend annual in person Steering Committee meetings which are held in English, and 2 to 3 virtual meetings throughout the year.
Nomination forms should be sent via email to Ms Forest Collins (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) no later than 8 March 2024.
Please refer to the IOC Circular Letter (CL-2983) for more information.
