The organizers aim to expand the scope of the meeting to include measurements of dissolved greenhouse gases and related ocean tracers for the first time! First circular
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) is pleased to invite you to participate in the 18th WMO/IAEA Meeting on Carbon Dioxide, Other Greenhouse Gases, and Related Measurement Techniques (GGMT-2015), which will be held on 13-17 Sept. 2015 in La Jolla, California. This will be the 40th anniversary of the first GGMT meeting (then called "CO2 Experts Meeting") which was also held at Scripps in 1974, and follows a series of regular meetings held every two years, with the previous GGMT-2013 meeting held in Beijing, China. This meeting will include a celebration of the occasion of the 40th anniversary
The early CO2 Experts Meetings focused on measurements of atmospheric CO2. Over time, the focus expanded to include the key greenhouse gases and tracers, their isotopes, assessment of new techniques of standardization, quality assurance, and data products. The target audience has broadened from problems and challenges in the field of precise measurements of atmospheric trace gases to the data utilization and integrated products and observational network design. In GGMT-2015 we aim to expand the scope additionally to include measurements of dissolved greenhouse gases and related ocean tracers.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has provided the umbrella to all GGMT meetings (and previous CO2 Experts Meetings). Since 1997 the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna joined WMO due to the increased use of carbon isotopes in studying the carbon cycle.
In addition to the information included in this circular, we would like to invite you to express your intention to participate in the meeting using the on-line pre-registration form: ggmt2015preregistration.eventbrite.com
Please fill in the form no late than 25 May 2015 to give opportunity to organizers to plan the logistics in advance.
Session topics
The traditional session topics will include the following:
-
- Developments of the GHG networks and sites update
-
- CO2 observations (measurements techniques and calibration)
-
- Non-CO2 observations (measurements techniques and calibration)
-
- Isotope measurement and calibration
-
- Emerging techniques
-
- GHG standards and comparison activities
-
- Integration of observations, data products and policy
-
- Recommendations discussion
-
- Ocean measurements of pCO2, other greenhouse gases, and related tracers
As one of the meeting’s aims is to update the WMO Recommendations (http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/arep/gaw/documents/Final_GAW_213_web.pdf), some of the experts will be invited to lead the discussions on the particular sections of the report.
Important deadlines
25 May 2015 – pre-registration deadline
15 June 2015 – second circular (Website with practical information)
15 July – abstract submission deadline and registration
Further emails will provide further information on meeting committees, venue, program, abstract submission and some other important reminders.
Very limited funds for travel support can be provided on request from the World Meteorological Organization. For further information on how to apply for these funds, please contact Oksana Tarasova (WMO, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
