We are excited to let you know that the European Research Infrastructure Integrated Carbon Observation System Ocean Thematic Centre (ICOS OTC) now delivers data with partial pressure of CO2 in water, together with ancillary measurements, from several stations in near-real time (NRT) mode. You can search, preview and download the NRT data from the ICOS Carbon Portal (https://www.icos-cp.eu/) by selecting “ICOS OTC NRT Product” under data type as in HERE. Currently, you can view NRT data from R/V G. O. Sars (PI: Ingunn Skjelvan, NORCE Norwegian Research Centre) and from M/S Nuka Arctica (PIs: Are Olsen and Meike Becker; University of Bergen) from the ICOS Norway network.
Data are being processed automatically by QuinCe which processes, quality controls, and publishes NRT data fully automatically. It retrieves raw data from the data streams provided by ships once per day, and ingests them for processing. Basic automatic quality controls are run (detecting out of range data, spikes and outliers) before performing data reduction to calculate the final fCO2 using community approved algorithms. The data sets are then uploaded directly to the ICOS Carbon Portal for publication as Level 1 Near Real Time data. All the data will be subject to secondary quality control when submitted to annual updates of the Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT; www.socat.info).
The development of this important new service for the ocean carbon observing community was led by the QuinCe developer Steve Jones from ICOS OTC (led by Richard Sanders), and the Bjerknes Climate Data Centre, University of Bergen (Norway) which is led by IOCCP SSG member Benjamin Pfeil.
